Tips to Save Dry Skin This Winter Tips to Save Dry Skin This Winter

Learn These Tricks and More in Esthetician School in Wichita, Kansas

When you become an esthetician after completing your training, your clients will come to you for advice on the best way to take care of their skin. You’ll soon see a pattern in skin concerns with every seasonal change.

Without a doubt, during the winter, your clients will ask you about how to best moisturize and care for their dry skin – and how to prevent the itching and flakiness associated with it. You’ll soon become a pro at explaining skin health. (And what is esthetics if not the science behind skin care?)

Start practicing delivering advice by reviewing these winter skin care tips with your clients in the student spa at Eric Fisher Academy.

Cut back on exfoliation.

It sounds counterintuitive to exfoliate less, especially when your face is plagued with flakey skin. It’s so tempting to grab your favorite scrub and go to town on your skin!

Your skin barrier weakens during the winter, and exfoliation can slow skin regeneration, which is what helps moisturizer to penetrate the skin’s surface.

It’s best to exfoliate combination or oily skin only once per week, and pay close attention to how your skin responds. People with dry skin should exfoliate even less.

Regularly apply moisturizer.

Your face isn’t the only part of your body that deserves moisturization. Don’t neglect the rest of your skin!

Fragrance-free moisturizers are ideal for daily use all over your body. Look for one enriched with hyaluronic acid to help improve hydration. You also should use a thicker hand and foot cream for those parts before you climb into bed for the night.

And just because it’s not summer anymore doesn’t mean you can skip on the SPF. Bright winter sun reflects off snow and ice, and even on a cloudy day, your skin can sustain sun damage.

Shorten steamy showers.

When the winter chill sets in, your first instinct is hopping into a hot shower to warm up. But hot water breaks down the lipid barriers in your skin, which can lead to painful cracking.

To help prevent your skin from drying out, opt for warm showers instead of steaming hot ones, and limit time under the water to no more than 10 minutes. Moisturize as soon as you dry off to protect your skin.

Use a home humidifier.

The static electricity feeling, shocks after walking across carpet, and dry skin can all be caused by dry winter air. Running a humidifier – even a small portable one – in your home can alleviate all these symptoms of the season.

If budget is a concern, place your humidifier in the room where you spend most of your time in, or move it from room to room. Your humidifier will increase the moisture in the air.

Humidifiers can put out either hot or cold steam. Cold steam humidifiers are preferable, especially if you have children or pets. Hot steam humidifiers are helpful if you’re experiencing respiratory congestion in addition to dry skin.

Give your humidifier some help by keeping your heater on as low as possible, but at a temperature that you’re still comfortable with. Especially if you have gas heat, your heating system can dry out the air even more in your home.

Opt for gentle cleansers and soaps.

As an esthetician, you can advise your clients on the best soap and cleanser products for their skin. During the winter, soothing chamomile and oatmeal can banish itchiness associated with dry skin.

When it comes to swapping out products for gentler options, be sure you’re replacing them all, including your facial cleanser and body soap. Avoid alcohol-based or astringent products, which can make skin feel even more dry and tight.

Get professional esthetics services.

Finally, you’ll want to advise that your clients come to see you for regular skin care treatments to keep their body’s biggest organ looking good and feeling well.

Have them visit the student spa at your esthetician school at Eric Fisher Academy, where you can not only provide skin services, but make your professional recommendations for products they should be using on their dry winter skin.
