8 Tips to Help Cosmetology School Students Prepare for the State Board Exam 8 Tips to Help Cosmetology School Students Prepare for the State Board Exam

Cosmetologist Training at Eric Fisher Academy Prepares You for a Great Career

Cosmetology classes at Eric Fisher Academy prepare aspiring hair stylists, makeup artists, and more for the State of Kansas Cosmetology Board exams, which students complete after earning their certificate from our award-winning program in Wichita.

Although the exam is difficult, Eric Fisher Academy students receive some of the best training available and ample time to practice techniques and services on real clients.

When it comes to test-taking, cosmetology students can follow these tips to prepare themselves for the board exams. (And we promise they’ll ask you harder questions than, “What is cosmetology?”)

Set aside time to study every day.

It’s easy for your schedule to become cluttered and overwhelming, leaving you without the time to study for your upcoming exam.

To help you stay on track, dedicate a portion of every day to studying. Like you would in a hair stylist’s appointment book, block off time by the half-hour and reserve it for studying. Don’t cram your studying all together; spread out your sessions to maximize your memory.

Find the study technique that works for you.

Everyone prefers to study a little differently. Find the method that is best for you and your situation. For example, some people like to reread textbooks or their notes. Others make and use flashcards. Some people need to talk out loud to reinforce their knowledge.

Your best bet at retaining information and having enjoyable study sessions is to find the way that you like, and keep at it.

Study with a buddy.

You and your fellow students are all in the same boat, so why not take advantage of it? Meet up with a pal or two, and study together. Take turns quizzing each other on cosmetology concepts, and helping each other understand them.

Studying is more fun when you have someone to do it with. Just be sure to stay on task and avoid getting distracted.

Take care of yourself.

Especially the night before your exam, but also all the time, it’s important that you’re taking good care of yourself and practicing self care. Doing so can reduce stress and make you feel more confident.

Eat healthy meals, get plenty of rest, exercise, and keep up your appearance. Take time to do activities you enjoy, too.

Complete a cosmetology license practice test.

Plenty of cosmetology practice tests are available online or in books to help you prepare for your exam. Take at least one to help familiarize yourself with the test format and ease your test-taking anxiety.

A practice test will give you an idea of what you can expect during the test. This familiarity can help you improve your test-taking performance.

Ask lots of questions of your cosmetology instructors.

If you realize you’re unclear on a concept, or don’t understand a certain technique, the best time to clarify is well before exam day!

Don’t be shy! Ask your instructors any question you may have. They’re here to help you succeed.

Attend cosmetology school near you every day.

Students who regularly attend class and make a point of putting in extra time to practice and study usually perform better. Make sure you’re in attendance and on time for class, so you don’t miss a single moment of instruction and practice.

Listen carefully to all instructions and read carefully on test day.

Misunderstanding test instructions or questions can set you up for failure – or at least a hard time. On test day, listen carefully to any instructions you’re given to ensure you understand them.

Then, when you’re taking the written portion of the exam, carefully read each question. This way you’ll never confuse “do” with “don’t” or misinterpret the text.
