Meet JJ Serrano, Esthetics Learning Leader at Eric Fisher Academy Meet JJ Serrano, Esthetics Learning Leader at Eric Fisher Academy

An EFA Alum Returns to Train Future Estheticians
Before attending Eric Fisher Academy, JJ Serrano fell in love with makeup artistry. He freelanced, applying makeup for attendees and participants of special events, like proms and weddings, before deciding to get professional training at the esthetician school at EFA.
After working in the esthetics world, JJ returned to our school in Wichita to train future estheticians in hopes they, like him, can go on to make a difference, both in the beauty industry, and in their clients’ lives.
We talked to JJ about his experiences as an esthetician learning leader and why he thinks Eric Fisher Academy is one of the best esthetician schools near you.
Why did you choose to work for Eric Fisher Academy?
I had an amazing experience here as a student going through the esthetics program. My instructors motivated me to be my best, and I wanted to come back and do the same for my students.
What do you like about instructing the next generation of estheticians?
I love how they are so open-minded when it comes to learning new things. This industry is always evolving, so there is always something new to learn.
What piece of advice do you give someone who is aspiring to become an esthetician?
Be yourself, and be willing to constantly learn new things! The more you know, the more you’ll be able to offer your clients, the more successful you can be.
What sort of personality do you need to be a successful esthetician?
Successful estheticians are confident! Having confidence is key.
How did you get your start in esthetics? In what kinds of places have you worked?
Before being a licensed esthetician, I freelanced doing makeup for special occasions like weddings and proms. Then, I started my esthetics education journey here at EFA.
After graduating and receiving my license, I worked at salons doing makeup and at a facial bar offering facial services like dermaplaning, medical-grade chemical peels, and waxing.
How has the field changed since you started working in it? Where do you see it going in the future?
There is always something new coming out in the esthetics world, so the esthetics field has grown so much since I started. The beauty industry is huge right now, and I see it continually growing in the future.
What’s your favorite part of the curriculum at Eric Fisher Academy?
I like everything, but my favorite has to be our Make-up Designory (MUD) curriculum. Makeup has always been my favorite thing to do, and I love all different looks and techniques from simple glam to crazy avant-garde. It’s very gratifying to share my makeup knowledge with our future professionals because I know it will expand their skill sets.
Why do you think students should choose EFA for their education over other places?
I think students choose EFA over other places because of the high level of education we offer here and the overall experience. I’m very proud to say I work for an amazing school that truly cares for their students and their education.
What can students expect from an education from Eric Fisher Academy, day-to-day?
Expect to learn something new every day when you are here! I always tell my students to act like a sponge, and absorb all the information and education we share with you.
How do you help students meet their goals – building skills, getting a job, etc.?
Here at EFA, we help students meet their goals in many ways, like helping them build their resumes for future jobs or coming up with questions to ask during an interview.
We also help them make professional Instagram and Facebook profiles to market themselves and showcase their work for potential clients and employers. Anything we can do to set them up for continued success and make sure they’re prepared post-graduation, we will do.
