1. Cosmetology School
In order to receive your cosmetology license, you must attend a licensed beauty school and complete a minimum of 1,500 of cosmetology training hours as required by the state of Kansas. 2. The Kansas Board Cosmetology Exam
After you complete cosmetology class schooling, you must pass the licensing exam issued by the Kansas State Board of Cosmetology in order to practice cosmetology and obtain your license. You are eligible to take the Kansas Board Cosmetology Exam upon completion of the 1,500 required training hours.
You must be referred by your beauty school, your apprentice program, or the Kansas Board of Cosmology in order to take the online exam. You must be at least 17 years of age to sign up for the exam, and at least 80 hours away from the completion of your cosmetology training program or hair school. Upon taking the exam, you should have completed your program or schooling requirements.
The Kansas Board of Cosmetology defines cosmetologists as hairstylists and makeup artists. Please be aware, if you are also interested in becoming a manicurist or esthetician, that may require meeting a different set of licensing requirements.
After you have been referred by your program, you will be given a username and password for registration and to schedule the time for your exam. Before taking the exam, be sure to read the Exam Guide from the Board of Cosmetology and pay for the two-part test. The current cost for the Practical Exam is $65 and the cost of the Written Exam is $50. Once you have paid the exam fees and completed an application form, you will then receive a voucher which will allow you to schedule a time for you to take the exams. In just one week, your scores will be ready to view online. To pass the exam and apply for licensure, you must receive at least 75% on the exams.
3. Your Application for Licensure
The Kansas Board of Cosmetology licenses for the following professions:

Before you can become a licensed cosmetologist, you must submit your application for licensure through the Board website. You will also need to submit:

- Verification of Your Kansas Board Exam Scores
- Name Change Documents (if needed)
- A $45 Application Fee
